Is it allowed to sing in the streets of Madrid without passing a test?

Last updated on October 23, 2025

Yes, you can sing in the streets of Madrid—but only if you have a permit, and no, you don’t need to pass a test.

Street music is part of Madrid’s soul. From flamenco echoes in Lavapiés to jazz riffs in Malasaña, the city’s public spaces are alive with sound. But behind the spontaneity lies a structured system. If you want to perform legally in the streets—especially in the central district—you’ll need to apply for an official authorization. The good news? No auditions, no talent tests, just paperwork.

Permits, Not Performances

Madrid’s Ayuntamiento (City Council) requires street musicians to obtain an individual permit to perform in public spaces. This applies to solo artists and members of musical groups alike. The authorization is personal, non-transferable, and must be visibly displayed during performances. It’s valid for one calendar year, from January 1 to December 31.

Applications are accepted annually between October 1 and October 15 for the following year. You can apply online via the city’s electronic registry or in person at municipal offices. The process is administrative—there’s no evaluation of musical skill or artistic merit. If the number of applications exceeds the annual quota (250 permits), a public lottery is held.

Where and When You Can Sing

Madrid’s regulations are detailed. The city is divided into zones with specific rules:

  • In commercial areas (Anexo I), performances are allowed daily from 12:00 to 14:00 and 18:00 to 21:00. Percussion is permitted, but amplification is not.
  • In residential zones (Anexo II), performances are limited to weekends and must be acoustic—no percussion or amplification.
  • In the Rastro market area (Anexo III), performances are allowed during market hours (9:00 to 15:00) on designated days.

Each performer or group is limited to one hour per day in a single location, and must maintain a minimum distance of 75 meters from other performers. There are also strict rules about proximity to building entrances, emergency exits, and restaurant terraces.

No Test, Just Respect

The city’s goal is to balance artistic expression with public order and noise control. That’s why the Instrucción 1/2024, issued by the Centro District Council, outlines sound limits and environmental considerations. But nowhere in the process is there a requirement to prove your musical ability. Madrid trusts its artists—and its audience—to decide what’s worth listening to.

So yes, you can sing in the streets of Madrid. Just get your permit, follow the rules, and let the music play.
