Is it allowed to marry by handfasting on a Mayan archaeological site in Belize without archaeological clearance?

Last updated on October 10, 2025

NO. The Institute of Archaeology within NICH requires permits for activities at archaeological and protected sites and publishes guidance and application forms for ceremonies and special events; holding a wedding or ritual on a protected Mayan ruin without an approved permit and site conditions is not permitted because the permit process protects site integrity and cultural heritage. Organisers must apply and obtain written permission before proceeding.
