Is it allowed to import a pet tapir into Belize as an exotic companion animal without wildlife permits?

Last updated on October 10, 2025

NO. Belizean wildlife and conservation laws protect native wild mammals and require permits for capture, transfer, import or keeping; the Institute of Archaeology / National Institute of Culture and History and the Forest Department set out permit requirements and controls for protected fauna, so bringing in or keeping a tapir without explicit environmental authority permission is prohibited. Ownership or import of native wild species must follow permit and welfare conditions.
