Is it allowed to train AI models using publicly available personal data in Australia?

Last updated on October 8, 2025

NO — unless you meet privacy law requirements. The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) clarified in 2024 that even publicly available personal data must be collected fairly and transparently. Developers must assess whether individuals are aware their data is being used and obtain consent for sensitive information. Violations may trigger enforcement actions.
