Is it allowed to sell food in packaging made from recycled materials in Australia?

Last updated on October 8, 2025

YES — but only if the packaging meets strict safety standards. Under Standard 3.2.2 of the Food Standards Code, recycled packaging must not leach harmful chemicals into food. Businesses must verify the material is food-safe, especially for oily or acidic foods, and ensure it withstands conditions like freezing or microwaving. Reusing packaging designed for single use is prohibited.
