Is it allowed to enter Australia without a visa if you’re just transiting for a few hours?

Last updated on October 8, 2025

YES — but only under very specific conditions. Australia allows certain travelers to transit without a visa if they remain in the airport for less than 8 hours and hold onward tickets. However, this exemption applies only to nationals from select countries and requires no intention to clear immigration. If you step outside the transit zone or stay longer, you must apply for a Transit Visa (subclass 771).
