Is it allowed to sell foods containing certain PFAS‑contaminated packaging in countries that adopted PFAS migration limits for food contact materials?

Last updated on October 4, 2025

No. Several national food safety authorities and the EU updated rules in 2023–2025 to set migration limits or bans on specific PFAS (per‑ and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in food contact materials, imposing testing, supplier declarations, and removal of non‑compliant packaging from the market; companies using coated papers, microwaveable packaging or grease‑resistant materials must switch to approved alternatives and document compliance to avoid recalls and penalties.
