Is it allowed to import or use e-cigarettes and vaping devices in Thailand as a tourist?

Last updated on October 19, 2025

Thailand’s beaches may be breezy, but its laws on vaping are anything but relaxed. Tourists often assume they can bring e-cigarettes for personal use, yet Thailand enforces one of the strictest anti-vaping regimes in the world. Misunderstanding the law can lead to fines, confiscation, or even jail time.

Importation rules
Importing e-cigarettes, vape pens, liquids, or accessories is illegal—even for personal use. This falls under Section 20 of the Customs Act, which prohibits the import of untaxed goods. Violators risk fines of up to 30,000 Thai baht, imprisonment for up to ten years, and confiscation of all vaping items. Possession and use
While some consumer protection rules were repealed in 2019, the legal status of vaping remains ambiguous. Enforcement is strict. Tourists have been fined or arrested simply for carrying or using a vape. Section 42 of the Tobacco Control Act prohibits vaping in public places, and police have broad discretion to issue fines or detain individuals. Sales and availability
Vaping products may appear in markets or nightlife areas, but their presence does not imply legality. Purchasing or using these items can lead to serious legal trouble.

Safer alternatives
Nicotine gum or patches are legal and available in Thai pharmacies. These are recommended for travelers who rely on nicotine but want to avoid violating local laws.
