Is it allowed to enter the Schengen area without pre-registering under ETIAS if you are a US passport holder?

Last updated on October 2, 2025

No. From 2025 onward most visa‑exempt travellers to the Schengen area will need an ETIAS travel authorisation prior to travel. ETIAS is an electronic travel authorisation that requires travellers from visa‑exempt countries to register online, provide personal and travel details, and pay a small processing fee. ETIAS is not a visa but is mandatory for entry if you would otherwise travel without a visa; airlines and border authorities may deny boarding or entry without it. The authorisation is usually valid for multiple short stays over a multi‑year period and must be obtained before arriving; spontaneous arrival without ETIAS will be treated as non‑compliant. Travellers should check the official EU ETIAS website for the full list of eligible countries and the exact operational dates and exemptions for minors, diplomatic passport holders, and other special cases.
