Is it allowed to use drones to film the Shwedagon Pagoda complex in Yangon, Myanmar?

Last updated on October 1, 2025

The Shwedagon Pagoda and many major religious and heritage sites in Myanmar are subject to strict no‑fly zones and cultural‑site protection rules; drone flights over the pagoda complex, nearby religious monuments and many urban heritage zones are generally prohibited without express permission from the Department of Archaeology and cultural authorities and aviation clearances from the Civil Aviation Authority of Myanmar. Permissions are rarely granted to casual tourists and unauthorised drone use can result in confiscation, fines or detention; professional film crews must apply for permits well in advance and meet security and cultural‑sensitivity conditions. Visitors should assume drones are not allowed over major pagoda precincts unless they hold written approvals.
