Is it allowed to use a smartphone camera to photograph government ID at some airports in New Zealand for self‑check?

Last updated on October 1, 2025

New Zealand border authorities and many airports allow travellers to use official e‑channels and self‑service kiosks that may include photographing passports and identity documents with smartphone cameras or kiosk scanners as part of automated border processing; these systems are run by New Zealand Customs Service or Immigration NZ and include secure capture, encryption and verification steps. Use of personal smartphone photos for informal or private storage of passport images is permitted but not a substitute for following official e‑Gates or e‑channels procedures; travellers should follow Immigration NZ guidance on using kiosks and the secure apps provided, and be aware of privacy and security notices that govern how captured images are handled by official systems. Do not post images of sensitive identity documents publicly.
