Is it allowed to operate commercial film drones in Antarctica for a documentary crew?

Last updated on October 1, 2025

Commercial aerial filming in Antarctica is possible but tightly controlled: national Antarctic authorities and tour operators require an explicit permit, environmental impact assessments under the Madrid Protocol, proof of pilot qualifications, contingency and recovery plans for lost equipment, insurance and strict wildlife‑disturbance limits. Permits are typically granted for scientific, conservation or high‑value professional media projects where the applicant demonstrates mitigation measures and minimal ecological impact; IAATO and national programs publish operational manuals and standard operating procedures for approved UAV use. Documentary teams must apply well before deployment, coordinate with the tour operator and the permitting nation, and expect conditions and flight windows to be restricted or rescinded if environmental risks rise. Failure to obtain required approvals risks expedition sanctions and prosecution by the permitting country.
