Is it allowed to import and use foreign‑registered pest‑control pesticides in South Africa for commercial agricultural spraying?

Last updated on October 1, 2025

In South Africa, the sale, importation and use of pesticides (agrochemicals) are regulated by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development and the Regulations under the Fertilizers, Farm Feeds, Agricultural Remedies and Stock Remedies Act. Importing pesticides registered elsewhere requires prior import permits, registration with the Registrar of Agricultural Remedies, labelling in official languages and compliance with prescribed maximum residue limits; unauthorised import or use of non‑registered agrochemicals is illegal and can trigger seizure, fines and criminal prosecution. Commercial applicators must be certified, follow occupational and environmental safety rules, maintain application records and adhere to buffer‑zone and withholding periods to protect consumers and the environment. Contact the Department before attempting to import or use foreign pesticide products.
