Is it allowed to film inside India’s Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) protected monuments for commercial use?

Last updated on October 1, 2025

Filming or photography inside ASI protected monuments for commercial purposes requires prior permission from the Archaeological Survey of India or the relevant state archaeological department; permit applications must specify the nature of the shoot, crew size, equipment, proposed timings and any anticipated impact on conservation and visitor access. Commercial shoots are subject to fees, insurance requirements, strict supervisory conditions, and may be refused where conservation risk or visitor disruption is judged too high. Drone filming over monuments additionally needs aviation clearances and no‑fly approvals from Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) where applicable. Unauthorised commercial filming can result in fines, confiscation of footage and legal action under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act and state regulations; independent tourists’ photography for private use is often permitted but may still be restricted in sensitive areas.
