Direct‑to‑consumer advertising of prescription‑only medicines (POMs) is prohibited in the UK under the Human Medicines Regulations and Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) guidance: companies must not market prescription medicines to the general public but may advertise to healthcare professionals with authorisation. Promotional materials must be accurate, not misleading and must comply with codes set by the Prescription Medicines Code of Practice Authority (PMCPA) and MHRA. Over‑the‑counter medicines and general wellness products have separate rules and may be promoted to consumers subject to labelling and advertising standards. Failure to comply can lead to enforcement action, advertising bans and financial penalties.
